Election Administration Officials from CIS Countries Strengthen Capacity at the Regional Training in Ashgabat – Read this news in Russian (PDF) –
 Work in groups Ashgabat, 16 September 2011 – Representatives of the Central Election Commissions and Offices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Turkmenistan strengthened their capacity and knowledge in the field of elections at a regional training held in Ashgabat from 12 to 16 September. The training was organized by the UNDP headquarters in New York and the UNDP Regional Centre in Bratislava.
As UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Lenni Montiel stressed in his address to the training participants, UNDP attaches great importance to electoral projects and programs. For example, UNDP provided electoral support to 35 countries in 2010. On average, UNDP supports national efforts in the field of elections around the world every two weeks.
The training was facilitated by certified trainers of BRIDGE, which is a modular professional development program with a particular focus on electoral processes. Through BRIDGE training methods, the trainees got a deeper insight into issues such as the electoral cycle and the types of electoral systems, voting systems and vote counting. They also reviewed the international electoral practices by example of the United Kingdom, British Columbia, New Zealand, Lebanon, Lesotho, European and the CIS countries.
 Practical exercise In addition to theoretical sessions, participants also worked in groups to simulate different voting scenarios and counting of votes, elections by party lists and proportional representation, etc.
Representatives of the Central Election Commissions of the CIS countries were also informed about the objectives of UNDP’s Global Programme for Electoral Cycle Support (GPECS). GPECS is a three-year global initiative to help countries improve their electoral laws, processes and institutions and enhance the participation of women in electoral processes.
