UNDP provides policy advice, project implementation and knowledge management services to support the development of Turkmenistan’s capacity for low emission and establishment of climate resilient communities, economies and ecosystems.
UNDP in Turkmenistan promotes investment in low-carbon technologies; energy efficiency strategies and use of alternative energy; improvement of ecosystem resilience to climatic risks, promoting sustainable biodiversity conservation and land use in the context of socio-economic development; reduction of disaster and climate risks; adaptation of water management practices to climate change and supporting overall institutional capacity building for effective environmental governance.
In Turkmenistan, UNDP supported the preparation of the National Climate Change Strategy, serving as the country's framework vision for long-term climate related interventions. UNDP is currently facilitating the elaboration of the Low Emission Development Action Plan, which is the major economic instrument to promote changes towards the green economy.
UNDP has been a leading agency in supporting Turkmenistan’s climate resilience efforts. To this effect, knowledge and capacities of 9 rural communities in 6 pilot areas have been built resulting in the enhanced local resources management practices. Joint efforts to identify gaps and policy priorities for enhancing the national energy efficiency policy framework have led to Turkmenistan’s commitment to promote energy efficient practices in the residential sector. With UNDP support Turkmenistan conducted pilot assessments of investment and financial flows required to ensure adaptation and low-emission measures in such sectors as electricity production, electricity consumption and oil and gas.
To create the enabling environment for the establishment of a functional, effective and ecologically coherent system of protected areas for Turkmenistan
The UNDP-GEF project supports reducing greenhouse gas emissions by improving energy management and reducing energy consumption in the residential sector in Turkmenistan
The project aims at strengthening water management practices at both local and national levels in response to climate change-induced water scarcity risks that are increasingly affecting farming systems in Turkmenistan
The project supports increasing resilience of agricultural and livestock communities through more effective climate risk management assessment and provision of risk information
