UNDP office in Turkmenistan

UNDP opened its country office in Turkmenistan in 1995 guided by the Standard Basic Assistance Agreement between the Government of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Development Programme signed on the 5th October 1993. As the UN’s leading development agency, UNDP draws on the world’s best experience and knowledge in helping the government of Turkmenistan to achieve its national development plans and nationalized MDGs. UNDP has consistently provided expertise, resources and technical support to the government of Turkmenistan with the aim of bolstering the capacity of national institutions in the sphere of democratic governance, environment, gender equality and empowerment of women and HIV/AIDS prevention. UNDP also assists Turkmenistan in implementing a reform agenda initiated in 2007 in the area of market reforms, private sector development, public administration, electoral systems and local governance.

UNDP Country Programme focuses on three areas – Democratic Governance, Environment and Sustainable Development, and Poverty Reduction and MDG Achievement under the UNDP Strategic Plan for 2008-2011. Gender and human rights related initiatives are also included in the country programme and mainstreamed across all other programme components. The UNDP country programme complements the country programmes of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). It also complements the efforts of other UN agencies in the country aimed at achieving the objectives of the relevant international conventions and conferences.  UNDP Turkmenistan aims at promoting the fullest possible government ownership across all UNDP Country programme focus areas with the support of all resident and non-resident agencies and the donor community.
