Millennium Development Goals

"The Millennium Development Goals were adopted five years ago by all the world's Governments as a blueprint for building a better world in the 21st century." Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were adopted at the United Nations Millennium Summit, which was held in September 2000 and brought together highest-level representatives from more than 180 countries. MDGs were adopted as a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets in order to fight the world's main development challenges, such as poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.

Serving as a framework for the entire UN system to work coherently together towards a common end, MDGs remain at the center of the United Nations efforts on the ground. Millennium Development Goals include the following eight goals to be achieved by the year 2015:

Goal 1

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Goal 2

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education

Goal 3Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Nationalized Millennium Development Goals prioritized by Turkmenistan have been outlined in the United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2005-2009 signed between the Government of Turkmenistan and United Nations Country Team in Turkmenistan.

United Nations Agencies in Turkmenistan are well placed to assist the Government in addressing human development challenges and reaching the Nationalized MDG Targets and other national goals, such as those identified in the Strategy of Socio-economic Development for the Period of Up to 2010 and the National Programme "Strategy of Economic, Political and Cultural Development of Turkmenistan for the period of up to 2020".
